Small Business Optimism Drops Slightly In August Due To “Manic Predictions Of Recession” (09/10/2019)

The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index (9/9) fell 1.6 points to 103.1 in August, due to fewer small business owners expecting better business conditions and real sales volumes in the months to come. The index remains within the top 15 percent of historical results, and the month saw favorable business conditions, in particular in job creation, earnings trend, and quarter-on-quarter sales. NFIB President and CEO Juanita Duggan was quoted saying, “In spite of the success we continue to see on Main Street, the manic predictions of recession are having a psychological effect and creating uncertainty for small business owners throughout the country. ... Small business owners continue to invest, grow, an hire at historically high levels, and we see no indication of a coming recession.”
